The city's history and architecture date from its founding in 1733 through the cotton era. The War of Secession forced an abrupt end to plantation life, and reconstruction afterwards brought many changes to the lifestyles of Savannah.

Savannahians are rightfully proud of their charming historic district, which is concentrated in a two and one-half square mile area. The original city was planned and laid out in 1733 by its founder, General James Edward Oglethorpe. The city consisted of 24 park-like squares surrounded by some of the South's most elegant mansions. Today - despite earthquakes, fires and hurricanes - almost all of Oglethorpe's original squares remain intact. They're now lush garden parks that beautifully showcase historically and architecturally significant 18th and 19th century homes and buildings.
